Canine Behavior Center "Rehabilitating Dogs and Educating Owners" |
Service Descriptions:
This consultation was developed to help all those soon to be parents. The first thing a parent is concerned about is the welfare and safety of the child. You love your dog, but wonder how he will respond to such a radical change about to occur in his home. Will he be fine with the baby? Gosh, I hope he doesn’t try to hurt the baby!
This consultation will show parents to be, all the things you can do to make the baby onboard experience a happy event for all, including your dog. Let’s face it; the dog was your canine baby for sometime, now his world is about to change. Why not help to make the new baby a positive experience for the dog. What you invest in time and training prior to the baby being born will go a long way to starting your child and dog’s relationship out on the right foot.
Never wait till the baby is born to introduce the dog to the concept of a baby in the house. You do not want to associate negative experiences and new house rules with the baby onboard!
If you’re planning on having children or just found out your going to have a baby, this consultation is for you. Don’t wait! The more time you have available to work with your dog the better results you will obtain.
Documentation is provided to the dog owner that can be used as a future reference guide. Every session ends with several minutes set aside for “Ask the Canine Behavior Counselor”.
First you will be requested complete an extensive background form regarding various aspects of your pet’s behavior, health and lifestyle. Next I make a behavior assessment and treatment plan that includes some reference to the reason for the behavior.
You will then be provided a full explanation for the behavior. This is an important aspect of behavior case management. Understanding what your pet is doing and the reason why is often a big relief and a crucial step in resolving the problem. Such knowledge also helps you develop the patience and understanding necessary to implement the recommended behavior modification strategies.
It is important to understand that many unwanted behaviors are actually normal behaviors that are being performed out of context or inappropriately from an owner’s perspective. A dog that is biting strangers is not necessarily a “bad” dog but rather maybe reacting aggressively to cope with his fear of physical contact with a stranger.
Once you understand the reason for your pet’s behavior, a behavioral treatment plan will be developed specifically for you and your pet. In addition, communication with the counselor via e-mail is available to provide support and answer questions as you begin to implement the recommendations.
Some of the major topics addressed include:
Note: Any type of dog behavior modification requires a commitment from both the counselor and the client to work together to find an acceptable solution. Success can only be achieved if the client is willing to implement the treatment plan recommended by the Canine Behavior Counselor.

Pre-requisite: Client must have completed a "Behavior Problem" Private Consultation with Canine Behavior Counselor.
The Canine Behavior Counselor and client identified the dog’s environmental triggers during the behavior problem consultation. The counselor provided the client recommendations and a treatment plan to implement with the dog.
The client now wishes to schedule an additional one on one controlled training session. The training session gives the client an opportunity to practice handling the dog’s problem behavior in a controlled training environment.
The goal of the training session is to help the client gain confidence in managing his dog’s behavior. In addition, the Canine Behavior Counselor coaches the client on new tools and techniques to apply to the situation.
